King Midas Sound released their enthralling debut album Waiting For You in November 2009. A hyper-modern nocturnal take on lovers rock, featuring delicate but sour electronic instrumentals topped with Roger Robinson's bitter-sweet falsetto and Kiki Hitomi’s fragile voice, it highlighted a hitherto less-exposed side of producer Kevin Martin’s musical evolution. For Without You Kevin Martin has sourced a pool of radical reinterpretations that follow somewhat in the tradition of reggae, in the same way that the original Waiting For You album did.

>Royal Trux - Singles Live Unreleased [Reissue/1997] 2xCD3xLP (Drag City)
Royal Trux was a band to which the word "definition" had no meaning. This 32-song bomb was dropped on a highly suspect America back in the early winter of 1997. Collected from 1988 to around the time they were signed to Virgin in 1994, this collection represents a living, breathing entity built of contradictions, rhythm, gleeful exploitation of limitations and clichés, the short con (and when you finally notice, they'd slip into the long one) and above all, total commitment.

>Various Artists - Eccentric Soul: Nickel & Penny Labels CD (Numero)
Numero’s final release of 2011 took five years to assemble. Astute readers of previous liner notes may remember a section on acclaimed Chicago dusties DJ Richard Pegue in Eccentric Soul: Twinight’s Lunar Rotation. But for those who are more aurally connected to Numero, he’s brilliant arranger and producer on Renaldo Domino’s “Not Too Cool To Cry” and “Nevermore,” the Perfections “Why Do You Want To Make Me Sad” and “Which One Am I,” and Sidney Pinchback’s “Soul Strokes.” As soon as Twinight was done Numero approached Richard about doing a similar treatment for his Nickel and Penny concerns. He was immediately interested, but then again, Pichard Pegue was interested in everything. He died in the middle of working on this project, but we think he’d be pretty thrilled with the finished product. Vinyl version due November 21.

>ESG - ESG [Reissue/1991] CD (Fire)

They opened for Public Image Ltd. and A Certain Ratio, they released records on the same label as Liquid Liquid, they had their music sampled countless times, and they became a playlist staple at '70s dance clubs like the Paradise Garage and the Music Box.” -- All Music

>The Strange Boys - Live Music CD (Rough Trade)
“ Texas skuzz-punks The Strange Boys made a move toward cleaning up its screechy R&B on last year's Be Brave, but the new Live Music is a whole other level of good behavior for the band. “Fabriclive 59 sticks pretty consistently to one scene. But it's a restless scene built on a premise of constant reinvention: UK garage, which from the late 1990s to the early 2000s mutated from a simultaneously roughed-up and opulent take on house music to the fierce and rap-derived clang-and-bang of grime. Since their formation in 2003 as a home-recording experiment, the Ills have evolved into a live band, in their element playing the extended jam. Questing synthesizers, tensely strung bass lines and chasing drum machines provide the perfect backdrop for John's deeply resonant reverb-drenched vocal. It’s a world where The Germs jam with Jerry Goldsmith, Cabaret Voltaire relocate to Eternia and Josquin des Prez writes a new score for RoboCop.

>Ty Segall - Goodbye Bread CD/LP (Drag City)
“Ty Segall can kick out jams with the best of them, but there's more to the 23-year-old garage rock wunderkind than fuzz riffs and Cro-Magnon bashing. He has a sensitive side, too. On ‘Goodbye Bread,’ the title track from his Drag City debut, Segall reconnects with his roots as a Laguna Beach surfer dude, dialing down the distortion in favor of chill and chiming guitar chords. The relentless chugging fuzz and vocal harmonies of “Elbow Grease,” the concrete thrust of the central riff of “8/16,” the thunderstruck arpeggio of “Pretty As Pie,” the siren song of “Pig Pile,” the unbridled scuzz of “Ripper No Lube,” and the alternating agit-punk and anthemic approach of the title track all reinforces Helms Alee's position as masters of diametrically opposed tactics.
