– Afro-Cuban [Reissue/1955] LP (Blue Note)
Recorded in 1955,
Afro-Cuban is the jazz trumpeter’s first classic album.
Drugs Dragons
– II & I/II LP (Dusty Medical)
The amazing thing about Milwaukee's Drugs Dragons is how close they come to distilling the essence of rock & roll into a recording. Their second LP ups the hook quotient and adds subtle yet significant touches to their sweat-and-blood soaked rock & roll. Buzzing electronics and field recordings from a Mississippi field at night contribute to a vaguely unsettling feeling that permeates the record.

Harvey Danger
– Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? [1997] LP (No Sleep)
Nearly two decades after its release, Seattle indie rock band Harvey Danger's cherished debut full-length album,
Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?, is available on vinyl for the first time.
Isaac Hayes
– Shaft [Reissue/1971] 2xLP (Fantasy)
Of the many wonderful blaxploitation soundtracks to emerge during the early '70s,
Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplished soul artists, and with "Theme From Shaft," he delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. Purple vinyl.

Jungle
– Jungle LP (XL)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Based around a core musical duo known simply as 'J' and 'T' who expand to a thrilling seven piece live band, Jungle make mesmeric, modern soul with true global appeal. Combining what The Guardian notes as "tribal in terms of rhythm but postpunk in sensibility" and Brooklyn Vegan proclaims has "a real vintage-ness here, recalling the period of funk and soul just as those genres started transitioning into disco," Jungle has quickly perked the curiosity of media across the globe.

Keyboard
– Hungry Man LP (Soundway)
Originally recorded for the EMI Nigeria label and produced by legendary producer Odion Iruoje, Keyboard was a one-off studio project formed by Brodricks Majuwa and Isaac Digha from circa 1978. These two session men were often used at the EMI studio and played in multiple recordings that Iruoje produced throughout the era. This extremely scarce and obscure record features amongst others Ignace de Souza of The Black Santiagos from the city of Cotonou, Benin and Jonni Wood from the band SJOB movement. Lilting, laid-back, solid, soul-funk grooves and beautiful horn arrangements with synth effects combine for a unique sound but one that is unmistakably from the sound forge of Odion Iruoje and his two front-line studio engineers Emmanuel Odenusi and Kayode Salami.

Takuya Kuroda
– Rising Son 2xLP (Blue Note)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Ascendant trumpeter and composer Takuya Kuroda makes his Blue Note debut with

Thorn In My Heart shows that Richey's still dreaming up fetching melodies that arc and bend in unexpected ways, and still discovering fresh angles from which to articulate matters of the heart. The array of top-tier guests include Trisha Yearwood, Jason Isbell, Wilco's Pat Sansone, My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel, and Will Kimbrough.
Sadistik
– Ultraviolet 2xLP (Fake Four Inc.)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl.
Ultraviolet is Sadistik's unabashed nosedive into the subconscious mind, a three dimensional portrait painted in hues of psychosis and psychedelia. Drawing on his background in clinical psychology and cinematic predictions, he creates a richly layered world of his own and offers the listener a passing glimpse through the keyhole.

Executive Slacks
– Executive Slacks [Reissue/1983] LP (Dark Entries)
Executive Slacks was spawned in the humidity of post-industrial Philadelphia by restless art students Matt Marello, John Young and Albert Ganss. The Slacks drew their influences from contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire and Tuxedomoon, but also from extremes like disco and dadaism.

Exiles From Clown Town
– Tape Scissors Rock LP (Soft Abuse)
Thuggish zen punk trio Exiles From Clowntown have operated in quiet corners and with genuine mystery for several years.
Tape Scissors Rock was made using the group's three 7" singles as a foundation. If it were it a building, it'd be brutalist and utilitarian. Inside, cryptic sci-fi, surf and road movies run on a loop, soundtracked by three strangely normal looking blokes wrestling mutant tunes from guitar, bass and drums.
Aretha Franklin
– Amazing Grace [Reissue/1972] 2xLP (Atlantic)

He Never Spoke A Mumblin’ Word is the fourth full-length from electronic black metal band Mamaleek. "The duo—a pair of brothers who prefer to keep their identities a secret—mix Middle Eastern song structures and samples, atonal experimental and avant-garde accents, guttural black metal howls, accessible electronic breakbeats, sludgy doom metal guitar-work, nimble piano interludes, and plenty of pop panache to create an unrelenting, moving sound." — Forbes
Melchior und das Menace
– Hunger LP (Castle Face)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. What we have here is a fabulous collection of classic Melchior und das Menace. We asked, he let us dig through the archive, and lo and behold: Hunger, a grip of unreleased Melchior gold. It will take less than ten seconds for the high to kick in after the rush of greasy guitars consume you at the get-go of "A Wizard Doesn’t Need A Computer." And yes, he’s taking the piss.

Roll The Dice
– Until Silence 2xLP+CD (Leaf)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl.
Until Silence marks a monumental shift for Roll The Dice. The characteristic framework of piano and synthesizer is reinforced with a newly conscripted string section: dramatic arrangements grind against furnace blasts of static, and phases of unrelenting rhythmic intensity collapse into moments of frayed, fragile beauty.
Royal Trux
– Hero Zero b/w Love Is… [Reissue/1989] (Drag City)
Reissue of Drag City’s very first release. Reviled in its day for its use of Moog synthesizer, but 25 years later, Royal Trux's catalog contains many perennial favorites and Neil and Jennifer are still going strong.

As the project developed, song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style.

"One part twee, two parts goth. Darkly shaded dream pop with a familiar sound - the dim crunch of Black Tambourine, the cool, textured vocals. The band has an immediacy that may come from their backgrounds in punk/hardcore bands like Ampere, Libyans, and Confins." -- Pitchfork

Subsequent Pleasures EP was released in 1984 and limited to 500 vinyl copies, serving as a precursor to the dark wave sounds they would champion on their self-titled debut on 4AD the following year.
Matthew Young
– Recurring Dreams [Reissue/1981] LP (Drag City)
At the apex of the Eno/Berlin schools' influence over a myriad of American followers, Matthew Young created eight EMS/Rhodes pieces solo, subtly weaving in variable-speed Revox manipulation of traditional rock instrumentation with the lightest of touches. Fans of Erik Satie, JD Emmanuel, private-issue new age or the more placid side of minimal synth should take note of this one.

– Ar-Kaics 2xLP (Windian)
Made up of alumnus of bands from across the "genre spectrum" (Chain & The Gain, The Shirks), this Richmond, VA-based group has come together to merge those influences into one sonically cohesive whole. If it makes you happy to call it a throwback, that's just fine, as long as you recognize they're crafting solid songs to stomp and swing to, and that their word is truth.

Daniel Bachman
– Orange Co. Serenade LP (Bathetic)
Bachman treats his guitar lines and licks in a way that resembles the earth itself, at its most pristine, delicate, yet also primal and overpowering. Braid

Released last week on CD – now available on vinyl. Braid’s first full-length in 16 years is an immediate, energetic album that completely eschews the traditional "reunion record" expectation of older people making slower, softer music. A large part of that can be attributed to the group’s rhythm section, Todd Bell (bass) and Damon Atkinson (drums), who have played in lockstep with one another for more than 15 years and whose musical chemistry is undeniable.

Cabaret Voltaire
– #7885 Electropunk To Technopop LP (Mute)

Holger Czukay
– Der Osten Ist Rot/Rome Remains Rome [Reissues/1984/1987] 2x10" (Groenland)
Der Osten Ist Rot sees Czukay’s roots in appropriative music and musique concrète – he trained under Stockhausen – come to the fore. Working with Conny Plank, Czukay uses an Emulator sampler to build messy, madcap collages, pairing lush orchestration with shredded radio broadcasts and ethnic loops. Rome Remains Rome is similarly sampledelic, and, infamously, features a sample of Pope John Paul II.

Eels
– Beautiful Freak [Reissue/1996] LP (Geffen)
HQ-180gm vinyl reissue now available. "Eccentric and quirky are the best ways to describe the Eels' debut effort,
Beautiful Freak. Concise pop tunes form the backbone of the album, yet tinges of despair and downright meanness surface just when you've been lulled into thinking this is another pop group, as titles like ‘My Beloved Monster,’ ‘Your Lucky Day In Hell’ and ‘Novocaine For The Soul’ indicate." -- AllMusic
Eula
– Orderly b/w Meadows 7" (Bloodmoss)
Recorded by legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans), Eula's angular, aggressive sound has reached their grandest scale yet. The merging of Alyse Lamb's guttural wails with the band's clashing guitars, deep rumbling bass, and booming backbeat-heavy drums is as chaotic as it is meditative. Bisi's focus on layers and textures is apparent here as he pulls back Alyse's haunting vocals just enough for the grimy feedback to have as much of an impact in all the heaviness.

Cassette is a mixture of sharply-angled rhythmic workouts and euphoric ‘60s garage pop melodies, balanced with a penchant for drone-y, VU-styled downer moments.

Pravada – Dirty Looks LP (SR)
When we started this record, we were having a lot of fun writing what we call Pravada’s "Rock Song" cycle—we have always been, at our foundation; a rock/pop band. Working on 'Dirty Looks' brought it to a new level; Jesse and I wanted to keep the arrangements more straightforward with a less-is-more approach—danceability, dynamics, big hooks.

There are cohesive themes throughout the record; kiss and tell, bait and switch, smash and grab. The new tremble, the familiar cramp and twist of heartbreak. Its the fountain you walk to everyday. The water that stills your blink. Falling and flying through the gravity of the sound...

Glimpses of the visceral sonic/rhythmic chaos of early Animal Collective; the fractured melodic sensibility of punk experimentalists like Wire and This Heat; as well as the influence of the loop-based electronics and sample-experimentation of pioneers like Disco Inferno and Seefeel or more modern dance splinter genres like juke/footwork and wonky.

Idlewild is neither a "best of" nor a "rarities" set, it is an ultra-vivid illustration of the band's prodigious output and singular musical vision. From the spare, folkie chug of "Words Are Like," which originally appeared as part of TMBG’s internet-only collaboration with eMusic back in the dot.com era glory days of 2001, to the propulsive, dance floor groove of "You're On Fire" from 2013’s Nanobots release, the scope of Idlewild is as wide as it is beguiling.

Mike Weis
– Don’t Know, Just Walk LP (Type)
Using loops of field recordings, gongs, radios, homemade instruments, drums and traditional Korean percussion, Weis (Zelienople) pieced together an album that is as reflective as it is mesmerizing. Magical Dirt is Radio Moscow’s fourth studio album. The band’s fountainhead Parker Griggs, along with partners-in-crime Anthony Meier (bass) and Paul Marrone (drums), have cultivated yet another blues-rock masterpiece that crossbreeds late ‘60s psych-rock and face-melting guitar histrionics with the foundation-crumbling rhythms from early ‘70s hard-rock, and even includes a couple of harrowing tracks built from the bedrock of rural Delta blues.
Alexis Taylor
– Await Barbarians LP (Domino)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Alexis Taylor's (lead singer of Hot Chip) second solo album,
Await Barbarians is a series of songs "from the halfway line." As always with Taylor's writing the moments of honesty are matched with a sense of humor, playfulness and bounce.

Traxman
– Da Mind Of Traxman Vol. 2 2xLP+MP3 (Planet Mu)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl.
Da Mind Of Traxman Vol. 2 follows 2012's first volume of the same name, and more recently, last year's Teklife Vol. 3: The Architek. Where those two albums saw Ferguson slicing and chopping the usual slew of R&B and hip-hop samples for his beats, this one is reportedly more stripped down, each track made with just a sample or two "diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources.
Various Artists
– Hits From The Streets Volme II 7"( Infinity Cat)
The A-side features "Inside the Phone," a Gary Numan-inspired pop song from Diarrhea Planet/OGG super group King Bitch, and "In My Box," a bratty yet lovable tune from Study Hall.
